The specialists at AAMC's Joint Center will guide you as you decide whether or not joint replacement surgery is the right choice for you.
The entire unit is dedicated to the care of patient who have had joint replacement surgeries. Patients receive care from a specialized team of nurses, surgeons, and physical therapists, who work almost exclusively with joint replacement patients.
About a month before surgery, patients go to a class at Anne Arundel Medical Center to teach them about how to prep for the surgery and what to expect after in Joint Camp. The class is taught by a nurse and a former patient talks to them and lets them know what their experience will be like.
Many of the nurses and doctors have many years of experience. This experience makes it possible for patients to get up and moving the first night after their surgery. The surgeons are also involved with almost every aspect of the care continuum, from the time they reach the hospital for surgery to the time they leave for outpatient physical therapy. Everything is carefully coordinated to ensure the best possible outcome.
A hip or knee replacement doesn't just improve the quality of life, but allows the patient to have a greater chance of living a healthier lifestyle. Patients who have successfully completed the program love to show off to their friends. Care givers at the Joint Center have heard many stories from past patients about how they're able to play golf and no longer need to use a walker or cane.
